Australis posted this link to Steven Goddard’s Real Science list of newspaper articles for us here in comments. I highly recommend it.
Whenever anyone – anyone at all – becomes anxious over apparently excessive melting of Arctic sea ice, this long list of previous such meltings will demonstrate that Nature can cope with it and bounce back from it.
Whenever anyone tries to alarm others with the modern, allegedly excessive, melting of Arctic sea ice, this long list of historical events will stop them in their tracks and prevent alarm.
It’s what we might call proof that modern sea ice melting is not unprecedented, despite the efforts made by the likes of Greenpeace to make us believe that it is.
Speaking of Greenpeace
For example, in August 2009, Greenpeace were caught in a lie. At Big Hollywood we read:
The outgoing leader of Greenpeace has admitted his organization’s recent claim that the Arctic Ice will disappear by 2030 was “a mistake.” Greenpeace made the claim in a July 15 press release entitled “Urgent Action Needed As Arctic Ice Melts,” which said there will be an ice-free Arctic by 2030 because of global warming.
NOTE: That press release dated July 15, 2009, is no longer available in the Greenpeace archive — although it retains hundreds of others. btw, it was easy to find some of their dissembling without mentioning wrongdoing: I merely Googled “greenpeace melting arctic”.
Then, blatant confirmation of these activists’ fiendish attitude to the truth:
Although he admitted Greenpeace had released inaccurate but alarming information, Leipold defended the organization’s practice of “emotionalizing issues” in order to bring the public around to its way of thinking and alter public opinion.
There was a time when I sympathised whole-heartedly with these environmentalists’ worthy objectives, but while these corrupted principles drive them and their objectives are shifted to wrecking property and breaking the law, they’ll have neither my coin nor my heart.

I have just started reading Patrick Moore’s “Confessions of a Greenpeace Dropout – The Making of a Sensible Environmentalist”
Moore was the co-founder of Greenpeace, and he claims that it became overrun by political activists (“peaceniks and neo-Marxists” to use his own terms) in the mid-Eighties.
He describes the current Greenpeace as “anti-intellectual, anti-science, and ultimately, anti-human”
Here’s an interview with Patrick Moore on the green movement.

This TVNZ article appeared last Saturday:
Grave fears over Arctic ice melt
Greenpeace says the second largest Arctic sea ice melt in recorded history has grave implications for wildlife like polar bears, and the planet as a whole.
The US-based National Snow and Ice Data Centre says the scale of the retreat is behind only 2007’s record melt.
Greenpeace says it’s a clear signal of how climate change is causing the rapid shrinking of the Arctic sea ice cap.
It says an Arctic free of summer sea ice could destabilise global weather patterns.
Greenpeace New Zealand campaigner Simon Boxer says the dramatic thaw sends a clear message to the New Zealand government.
He says the setting up of new frontiers in extreme oil, Solid Energy’s preparations to dig up six billion tonnes of lignite in Southland, and Fonterra’s ongoing use of palm kernel, all have to stop.

The regular melting and re-freezing periods have no correlation at all with levels of greenhouse gas emissions.
But they are well correlated with fluctuations in sea ice in Antarctica. The mass of Arctic sea ice lost in the Northern summer was exceeded by the mass of Antarctic sea ice simultaneously gained in the Antarctic winter.
The alarmists constantly criticise references to regional events, pointing out that global averages are what matter.
In my view, Greenpeace has lost all credibility. It seems to me that it uses alarmist tactics shamelessly in its advocacy to shut down any form of enterprise. It seems to bereft of any thinking that might be constructive for human endeavour but rather is driven by a Malthusian form of negativity.

Hi Richard,
There has just been a book released in Australia titled “Hubert Who?”, a biography of the late Sir Hubert Wilkins. by author Malcolm Andrews.
I gleaned from an interview with Andrews that Sir Hubert Wilkins when he passed away in late 1958, his ashes were taken by USS Skate on the trip to the North Pole in 1959 and were scattered in a ceremony by the ships crew.
There is a Wikipedia entry on Sir Hubert Wilkins, which gives an outline of his rather remarkable life.
There are various feature named in his honor Wilkins Ice Shelf, Wilkins Sound.
Just FYI.
Good work, keep the bars—s honest

Fascinating! Thanks, Jeff.
