Newsletter #16 28 Apr 2010

Greetings Climate Realists,
It’s been a busy week once again.

Hello once again Climate Realists,

********************

UPDATE – 29 April

Regarding the protest march planned for 15 May:

Climate Realists is a single issue lobby group. We were formed out of a joint concern about the accuracy of the climate information being presented to the general public. (The global warming delusion) The political result of this information, as we all know, is the Emissions Trading Scheme to which we are totally opposed.

The march will not be solely confined to opposing the ETS. It would not be appropriate for us as a Climate Realists Network to endorse this march which covers a wide range of issues.

Neil will not now be one of the speakers at the march on the 15th May, and Climate Realists as a network will not be officially endorsing this event.

We will continue to work in every way we are able to convince the government to at least defer if not scrap their ETS.

We will also continue to inform this network about new developments, meetings, interesting research etc as it comes to hand and provide a forum for members to contribute their views on this issue.

Anyone who wishes to attend the march and seeks further information
please contact the organiser Mike Plowman.
s.plowman@xtra.co.nz

All the best,
Neil and Esther
********************

Friday night saw Neil at a public meeting listening to Barry Coates of Oxfam who, although he is to be commended for his concern for the impoverished of the world, unfortunately does not have a very accurate handle on the truth about climate change. Neil was impressed at being allowed to contribute by way of comments and questions and also took the opportunity to speak with Mr Coates afterwards. He has since written a letter to the Gisborne Herald which may be viewed at: http://www.climaterealists.org.nz/node/361

Monday night saw Neil addressing a FGBM meeting in Gisborne, and today he’s away to Mahia attending another climate meeting- this one run by MAF (again). Hopefully he will be able to have some input there too.

We are all very disappointed that the government has seen fit to continue with its ETS despite the announcement yesterday that Australia’s ETS legislation is now on the back burner for at least three years.
http://www.smh.com.au/opinion/politics/ets-off-the-agenda-until-late-next-term-20100426-tnbc.html

All the more reason to encourage members of this network to get out and protest on the streets-
the opportunity is presenting itself in just over two weeks- Saturday May 15th in Hamilton.

A protest march will be held to coincide with the regional National Party conference-
see further details later in this newsletter.
We will be travelling six hours from Gisborne to get there, and we know others are coming all the way from National Park to join in. How about you?

PLEASE make the effort to be there and demonstrate your concern.

KEEP WRITING THOSE LETTERS:

Below is an excellent example of the kind of email that is well worth sending on to your friends and acquaintances.
We need to keep up the pressure!

I am sending you this email as I believe it is imperative that the Emissions Trading Scheme must be put on hold immediately. From 1st July this year it will cost the average family between $1500 and $5000 per annum. The average farm will be dragged down by $10,000 per annum by this non-sensical scheme.

I urge you to take a few minutes to read the attached document, and/or watch the 5-minute video of John Boscawen’s parliamentary address on March 24th. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2bo_LwRkl0&feature=player_embedded

And then I would urge you to write or email John Key (‘john.key@parliament.govt.nz’) and ask him to announce a hold on the introduction of this new tax which is due to start on 1st July (my email to him is attached). You may also like to email your local MP (email addresses listed here: http://www.nzcpr.com/parliament.php). A few sincere emails on a given topic can make all the difference to an MP’s position.

Finally, I ask you to tell all your contacts and friends about this urgent problem. Feel free to forward this email.

Many thanks,
Mike

NEW ZEALAND CLIMATE SCIENCE COALITION

The madness of the Government’s new carbon tax is that New Zealanders will be the only people in the world paying it. It will drive up the costs of living and undermine the competitiveness of New Zealand business for negligible environmental gain.” Nick Smith – Friday, 25 November 2005 http://www.nick4nelson.co.nz/nelson-marlborough-farming-december-column.html

On the 1st July, 2010, New Zealand’s Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) is to be implemented.
The ETS is effectively a new tax that will affect most sectors of the New Zealand economy, raising prices for all New Zealanders.
It can be estimated it will eventually cost the average New Zealand household about $2500 – $3000 in higher prices (worsened by any increase in the rate of GST). In addition, Sheep and Beef farmers will become liable (at $25/tonne CO2) to $5,200, while Dairy farmers will pay over $10,000 each – with 75% of these levies commencing in July 2010. And then there is the jump in prices of EVERYTHING, followed by higher interest rates!
For what?
For no measurable changes to CO2 levels and climate!
There are no positives, only negatives for the people of New Zealand.
We join the business and farming communities in calling on the Government to defer the implementation of the ETS given:
– that it has just become known that Australia is deferring the implementation of its ETS scheme until 2013,
– that no other country has put in place any similar scheme,
– that its implementation will severely disadvantage NZ against its trading partners,
– that it will cause unnecessary hardship for a very large number of New Zealanders.
——————————————————————————————————————-
Five new videos – ‘The Emissions Trading Scheme: The Really Inconvenient Truth – For New Zealand’ – are now on YouTube
They can be found at the following links:
Barry Brill, Former Member of Parliament, Minister of Science, and Minister of Energy, and now Chairman of the NZCSC, overviews a brief history of the ETS and addresses its downsides.
Barry Brill – 7 mins – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Bu2t29Lu30
Professor Bob Carter from James Cook University (Queensland) provides a 20 minute interview about his new book – Climate: the Counter-Consensus * – in which he distinguishes three different aspects of the public discussion of climate change as corresponding to science reality, virtual reality (computer models) and socio-political reality. These distinctions have important scientific and policy implications, yet until recently they were absent from the public debate.
Prof Bob Carter PART 1 – 10 mins – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZxgJFTLppA
Prof Bob Carter PART 2 – 10 mins – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7wmPeAyoiE
Dr Jock Allison, Former Director of the MAF Invermay Research Centre and critically involved in recent improvements to the NZ sheep industry, addresses the effect the ETS will have on Agriculture.
Dr Jock Allison – 10 mins – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXUdpZlwHuA
Bryan Leyland, is a consulting engineer specializing in electricity generation and transmission, and speaks to the effect of the ETS on the power industry.
Bryan Leyland – 6 mins – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROYt2m5B55I
Please watch the videos and spread this message far and wide!
Forward it to all who will be interested…and even those who are not! If they live in NZ, they will be affected by the ETS!

CO2 REALLY DOES HELP PLANTS!

In case you missed it last week- this is a great little video.
It demonstrates how much betetr plants grow in a CO2 enriched environment.

Bolivian Conference: Keep an eye out for wht’s happening in the world:
There were four big ideas proposed for the conference by the Bolivian government:

“That nature should be granted rights that protect ecosystems from annihilation (a ‘universal declaration of Mother Earth rights’);
that those who violate those rights and other international environmental agreements should face legal consequences (a ‘climate justice tribunal’);
that poor countries should receive various forms of compensation for a crisis they are facing but had little role in creating (‘climate debt’);
and that there should be a mechanism for people around the world to express their views on these topics (‘world people’s referendum on climate change’).”

THE university embroiled in the scandal over leaked climate change emails has sparked outrage by handing the personal details of climate change sceptics to police.

The University of East Anglia claimed it had been deluged with requests from sceptics under the Freedom of Information Act shortly before hacked emails were published which appeared to show scientists manipulating climate change data.
But the university has angered privacy campaigners after passing on the details of those asking for information to Norfolk Police, which is investigating the alleged email theft with the National Domestic Extremism Unit

Global Warming for Dim Wits: A Scientist’s Perspective of Climate Change by James R. Barrante

Human beings are not very bright. The power output of the human brain is about 40 watts, and that is indeed pretty dim. We definitely are all dim wits. This book was written for dim wits from one dim wit to another, as they say. Its primary purpose is to address the controversy affectionately known as global warming. Written by a physical scientist with over 40 years of teaching experience, the book contains very little personal opinion, has no political agenda, and is loaded with well-documented and scientifically tested facts concerning the greenhouse gases and climate change. It contains material that you will want to share with your children.

Global Warming for Dim Wits is written in simple language. Every attempt has been made to present the material in a way that the average person not trained in science will understand. It is the intent of this author that by the time you finish the book you will be convinced that:
– greenhouse gases do not control the climate, the climate controls greenhouse gases
– your children will understand that they are safe and the sky is not falling
– climate change is a natural process that takes tens of thousands of years to occur.

Mike Butler: Nats, tell Key what you think

Those who voted National in 2008 probably didn’t foresee that they were voting to further Maori Party goals. Prime Minister John Key has made that fringe party’s radical objectives mainstream by agreeing to: Fly the Tino Rangitiratanga flag of Maori sovereignty on government buildings on Waitangi Day; devolve about $1-billion a year to Maori social service providers; sign up to the United Nation’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples; and could enact a radical law change to give Maori de facto sovereignty over the foreshore, seabed, substrate, and airspace.

I Hate The Media says there are some good reasons not to believe the gloomy predictions you heard yesterday on Earth Day.

Just check the predictions made on Earth Day 1970:

“We have about five more years at the outside to do something.”
• Kenneth Watt, ecologist

“Civilization will end within 15 or 30 years unless immediate action is taken against problems facing mankind.”
• George Wald, Harvard Biologist

“We are in an environmental crisis which threatens the survival of this nation, and of the world as a suitable place of human habitation.”
• Barry Commoner, Washington University biologist

“Man must stop pollution and conserve his resources, not merely to enhance existence but to save the race from intolerable deterioration and possible extinction.”
• New York Times editorial, the day after the first Earth Day

“Population will inevitably and completely outstrip whatever small increases in food supplies we make. The death rate will increase until at least 100-200 million people per year will be starving to death during the next ten years.”
• Paul Ehrlich, Stanford University biologist

“It is already too late to avoid mass starvation.”
• Denis Hayes, chief organizer for Earth Day

“Demographers agree almost unanimously on the following grim timetable: by 1975 widespread famines will begin in India; these will spread by 1990 to include all of India, Pakistan, China and the Near East, Africa. By the year 2000, or conceivably sooner, South and Central America will exist under famine conditions….By the year 2000, thirty years from now, the entire world, with the exception of Western Europe, North America, and Australia, will be in famine.”
• Peter Gunter, professor, North Texas State University

“Scientists have solid experimental and theoretical evidence to support…the following predictions: In a decade, urban dwellers will have to wear gas masks to survive air pollution…by 1985 air pollution will have reduced the amount of sunlight reaching earth by one half….”
• Life Magazine, January 1970

“By the year 2000, if present trends continue, we will be using up crude oil at such a rate…that there won’t be any more crude oil. You’ll drive up to the pump and say, `Fill `er up, buddy,’ and he’ll say, `I am very sorry, there isn’t any.'”
• Kenneth Watt, Ecologist

“Dr. S. Dillon Ripley, secretary of the Smithsonian Institute, believes that in 25 years, somewhere between 75 and 80 percent of all the species of living animals will be extinct.”
• Sen. Gaylord Nelson

“The world has been chilling sharply for about twenty years. If present trends continue, the world will be about four degrees colder for the global mean temperature in 1990, but eleven degrees colder in the year 2000. This is about twice what it would take to put us into an ice age.”
• Kenneth Watt, Ecologist

And, indeed, from the Earth Day site, the same old doomsday message:

Forty years after the first Earth Day, the world is in greater peril than ever….
